SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH

Since 2003 Philanjalo has been presenting scientific research at major international conferences (e.g. Bangkok, Rio de Janeiro, Paris, Durban, Toronto, Denver, and Cape Town).

Often our research has been in collaboration with other organizations, such as TF Cares, and the South African DOH.

Major areas of ongoing research:
  • Sizonqoba Study:  Providing ARV therapy to HIV-TB co-infected patients using a once daily ARV regime supervised by an existing community DOT program. Over 100 patients are followed up closely over a two year period where adverse events, adherence, TB and HIV outcomes are documented.

  • Behavioural study: This study looks at behavior trends of patients as they improve on ARV therapy using an innovative interactive Audio-computer program. Patients are interviewed by a recorded questionnaire and respond by touching pictures on a computer screen. Totally illiterate patients are able to do this after a 15 min introduction.

  • Natural History Study: This is a retrospective study following the natural course of HIV disease in 100 HIV/TB co-infected patients before the availability of HIV.

  • Cost effective study: This is a comprehensive study of all cost implications of providing an ARV therapy rollout in a rural resource poor area.

  • MDRTB surveillance: This surveillance looks at the prevalence of Multi-Drug resistant TB over time and documented an outbreak of an Extended Highly Drug Resistant form of TB in Msinga.

  • Palliative Care Study: A qualitative study of palliative care provided by the various programs are documented, by patient, family and carer interviews.
