Where We Are
Philanjalo is
a located near the end of the main street (out of 2) which runs
through Tugela Ferry, a small town between Greytown and Dundee, 2.5
hours North of Durban.
Philanjalo shares the main street with the
Church of Scotland Hospital (COSH), a hardware store, supermarket,
local restaurant, auto repair shop, and a convenient store, among other things.
Tugela
Ferry gets it's name from the uThukela River which flows from
the Drakensburg Mountains to the Indian Ocean (Durban North Coast). In
early days, travellers would come to Tugela Ferry to cross from one
side of the river to the other. This ferry has since been replaced by
a single lane bridge.
Although
the town has running water, electricity, and phone service, none of
these are always dependable, and all three are luxuries for the
residents living outside of town.
Homes in the surrounding area are
constucted with traditional materials in traditional styles (mud, rock,
straw), although concrete and tin-roofed structures have started to
appear.
Roads
in the vicinity of Tugela Ferry range from easy-to-travel paved tar
roads to more difficult gravel roads. Routes up to homes on
nearby hills aren't even formal roads, merely being ruts dug into the
terrain by vehicles over time, often being quite uneven due to large rocks being exposed in
the dirt. These demanding road conditions require that teams going out
to the surrounding areas be supplied with Bakkies (jeeps and
trucks with elevated ground clearance) to ensure safe travel.
